Bird’s-eye views of Rio de Janeiro are famously found on the summits of Corcovado and Sugarloaf, two iconic peaks overlooking the city. But for a bird's-eye view of those perches, and an even more expansive sweep of Rio, the peak of Pedra da Gávea is great. Rising some 820 metres above the canopy in Tijuca Forest, the granite dome is one of the world's tallest mountains that ends straight into the sea.
Summit hikes begin in the dense urban rainforest and involve lots of clambering over tree trunks and scaling stone stairs. Once at Pedra da Gávea's sheer rock face, ropes, pulleys and a harness are used to scale the rest of the way to some truly awe-inspiring views.
